Ya Bruins!

Having grown-up watching Orr, Espo, Cheese and the rest of the bad-ass Bruins of the 70′s when hockey ruled Boston, it’s great to see the team and the sport back in a big way. Everywhere you go you see people wearing Lucic and Thomas shirts, spoked-wheel logos in the windows of bars with the word “Believe” underneath, Network TV crews all around the Garden. The Hub of Hockey is restored.

This Stanley Cup series was phenomenal. I know the ratings paled compared to what they get for NFL, NBA and even MLB, but the viewing #’s were up, it was awesome TV and the announcers, with their quirky Canadian accents, were outstanding. Geico and Verizon got a ton of exposure from their sponsorship deals, not that either needs much more exposure. And the NHL “No Words” spot was in the same league as NBA’s Amazing, IMHO.

At Mullen, we’re damn proud of what the Boston Bruins have done and proud to have been their partner on the Bruins Hockey Rules campaign the past couple of years. Roll-out the Victory Dance video one more time. The Bruins are Stanley Cup Champions!

Where do bears go? At last an answer to the age-old question

It’s one week until the NHL Playoffs begin and we Bruins fans, and even Coach Claude Julien, have many questions. Who will the Bruins play in the opening round – Canadiens, Sabres, Rangers? Are we ready to make a championship run? Will the hard-nosed Shawn Thornton win the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey?

While we await answers to these excellent questions, we do have the answer to an age-old riddle courtesy of our friend The Bear.

Good luck to the Bruins in the playoffs and don’t forget to grab your playoff tickets. This feels like it could be the year of the Bear.

Hey the Boston Bruins are off to a hot start: 4-2 in their first six games. And the Bear is out of hibernation hitting the sports bars around the TD Garden and enforcing the rules for the 2010-2011 season. In search of new material, the Bruins are inviting the fans to bring the funny. Write a new Bruins Hockey Rule and you might get some TV time.

Quick congrats to all the winners at the One Show last night. Here at Mullen we’re proud because the Boston Bruins Date spot picked-up the lone pencil in the TV under $80K category.

The billboard that woke up the Flyers

Now speaking of the Bruins, they’ve got a job to do tonight. Looks like we pissed-off the Flyers with that nasty billboard the Bruins put up outside the Boston Garden. Flyers haven’t lost since.

Our guess, the Bruins close the deal tonight and advance to play the beloved Canadiens.

This moment of locker room bonding can only bode well as the Bruins head to Fenway Park on January 1st to take part in the Winter Classic against the Philadelphia Flyers. Because as we all know, when a 7-foot bear and an NHL superstar exchange gifts, only good things can come from that. Our prediction … Bruins: 4 Flyers: 2.

Black and gold strike gold at Hatch Awards

Big night for Mullen and the Boston Bruins at the 49th Annual Hatch Awards for Creative Excellence. The Bruins Hockey Rules campaign won gold for national television. The individual spot called Date also won gold in the category.

Congratulations to the team of Greg Almeida, Jesse Blatz, Jamie Ferreira, Matt Fischvogt, Zeke Bowman, Stephen Larkin and Mark Wenneker. Thank you to Darrell Wood, Chris DiPierro, Jen Compton, Amy Latimer and Cam Neely at the Bruins for supporting the work.

BTW, the Bear has made his 2009 season debut.

Mullen also won Hatch Awards last night for Olympus, the Grain Foods Foundation’s Bread Art Project, the New England Aquarium’s sea turtles, Mammals in Motion and Live Blue projects, as well as the Ad Council’s Buzzed Driving campaign. Congrats to everyone who worked on these campaigns. Creativity lives.

Cam vs. the Bear

When the NHL announced that this year’s Winter Classic would be played at historic Fenway Park, the city of Boston roared with excitement. Pitting two heated NHL rivals – the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers – outdoors in a beloved baseball park on New Year’s Day - this has become the “must see” event in one of America’s greatest sports towns.

So to get things heated-up, what if you took the Bruins’ lead enforcer from the 80’s/90′s and matched him up with “The Bear” from the Bruins Hockey Rules commercials created last season?

At 6 ft.,1 in. and 215 lbs., Cam Neely was as devastating with his body checks and fists as he was with his goal scoring exploits. At 6 ft.,8 in. and 300+ lbs., “The Bear” has been known to slap a fan for tucking-in his Bruins sweater, chase someone for talking on his mobile phone, and even wrestle with a guy for dating a Habs fan (but, she was pretty!).

By the way, did you check out the new sweater for the event? Rumor has it “The Bear” has been trotting around the city wearing it.
