12.08.2007 — Mullen to Move Agency Headquarters From Wenham to Boston, Massachusetts

Setting the stage for the next decade of growth, Mullen today announced it will relocate the agency’s headquarters from Wenham to Boston, Massachusetts. Mullen is a 700-employee, four-office, full-service advertising agency with 420-employees in its Wenham headquarters. With this move, Mullen will occupy approximately 100,000 square feet in what will be called The Mullen Building at 40 Broad Street in downtown Boston near the city’s Post Office Square and Faneuil Hall areas. The agency has more than doubled in size since 2000 and rapidly outgrown its existing space as it has expanded from traditional advertising, direct marketing and public relations services to include digital marketing, performance analytics and marketing-to-women specialty groups. Mullen plans to be in place at the new headquarters by June of 2009.

Mullen first opened shop in 1970 in the Marblehead, Massachusetts, home of the agency founder, Jim Mullen. The agency has been at its present location, a manor house and 50-acre wooded estate in Wenham, Massachusetts, since 1987. Over the past 20 years, Mullen has used its unusual and distinctive location as a competitive advantage, reflecting a unique company culture. The agency has built a national client base and has grown from a small creative boutique into the 22nd largest agency in the country.

“The communications and marketing business is undergoing radical transformation and we’re building an agency where creative content, media expertise and technology all seamlessly work together,” said Joe Grimaldi, chief executive officer of Mullen. “Our vision for the new space is an environment that enhances collaboration between agency disciplines, innovative thinking and staying connected with consumers. We believe in revolution through evolution, and this move will enable Mullen to continue its rapid growth and transformation through work style, workforce composition and simply shocking the system.”

In Boston, Mullen will be occupying the top four floors (8-11) in the 40 Broad Street building. Mullen chose 40 Broad Street because of its location in an area targeted by the city for invigoration, and because of its excellent proximity to places like the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the Boston waterfront and Faneuil Hall.

“We wanted a destination building that would bear our company name and in which our presence would be significant,” noted Grimaldi. “We did not want to be a faceless company on several floors of a skyscraper.”

“From Marblehead to Wenham to Boston, no matter where Mullen resides in the region, their reputation as outstanding neighbors and community leaders precedes them,” said Paul Guzzi, president & CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber is delighted to welcome Mullen to Boston’s historic financial district.”
