Zappos.com: More than Shoes!

Posted by Kay Pancheri on 07/14/11

For Mullen’s latest campaign for Zappos.com, we had an interesting task — communicate that the online retailer known for its shoe selection also has clothing. Embracing the Zappos’ core value of “Do more with less”, we did just that. Our new campaign features characters who would be a bit more comfortable if they’d only known Zappos.com carries more than shoes. The new campaign launched in August issues of women’s magazines, and will expand to include online media and QR codes in upcoming weeks. Initially written up in the New York Times, the campaign has also received industry attention in Adweek, Creativity, and Mashable.

I like these ads except for the placement of the “more than shoes” graphics. Maybe some opacity would help?

This ad campaign is terrible.  It objectifies your target audience.

objectifies how? these women are without clothes because they don’t know zappos sells anything other than shoes. shop there. get less “objectified.” Second, if these women are willing to take these pictures, that’s their own prerogative; “you” aren’t being objectified at all…

Lacks a bit of creativity, I saw the same images at a photo exhibit in NYC back in April, don’t tell Tony!

The concept is okay, but I do not think the layout works well because side bar is disjointed/separate from the ad. It looks like 2 different concepts on the same page.  I would like to see this with a) the clothes perhaps playfully overlapping the large square up photo, b) the headline type treatment picked up somewhere in sidebar c) the subject closer to the copy, leading the eye into the copy and the logo.
