Save a life

Posted by Mark Wenneker on 12/17/09

Typically this time of year the airways become bombarded with scare tactic advertising designed to deter people from driving drunk. And while that is certainly one way to look at it, we thought we’d try something a bit more optimistic this year. Instead of shunning the people who drink and drive why not celebrate the person who doesn’t?

Mullen’s new spot for the Ad Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is called Save a Life and it celebrates the heroic decision of an everyday woman named Rachael to not drive home drunk after having one too many drinks. Rachael is recognized and celebrated by world leaders including the Pope, the Dalai Lama and the President of the United States for her decision to not drive drunk.

Ultimately the decision to not drive drunk or buzzed is gigantic. Maybe not gigantic enough to deserve a handshake from the Pope or have a ship named after you. Unless of course you’re the family who didn’t get killed that night. They may beg to differ.

Credit to copywriter Ari Weiss, art director Gavin Lester, creative director Michael Ancevic, producers Liza Near, Zeke Bowman Erika Whitters and Caitlin Gould, account leaders Drayton Martin and Jessica Zdenek and the director Noam Murro and DP Toby Irwin at Biscuit. All of these people performed their own heroic efforts to get this spot on air.
