Helpful article, thanks. I've switched over to bartering recently for most of anything I can get without having to shell out cash. There are a couple sites out thereto use, to connect with people who are looking to barter trade/swap items or even services (carpentry work for auto work, etc). One of the sites I use is Baarter - http://baarter.com

I have mixed feelings about this. I think for some people, women or otherwise, this will ring true. But I believe that, barring unforeseen circumstances like job loss, people with good financial habits pre-economic meltdown have been far less touched by the crisis. The Green and DIY movements are hardly new, but the mainstream has just recently discovered what many of us have known all along: Buying Stuff Doesn't Make You Happy. It's probably blasphemous for someone in advertising to write that, but, let's face it, we kinda have ourselves to blame for the "more is more" mentality.

On the flip side, I've scored some awesome deals on luxury items since the financial world collapsed, so in a weird way 've become more empowered to buy things I would've considered frivolous in the past.

another great bartering site is http://www.barterquest.com ! It has especial categories for women like clothes, accessories, jewelry, babies & much more. I love to barter on this site, because only real items are listed and you can find everything thanks to the amazing browsing and matching system.

I am being more "green" about using items I purchase to the max. For example, I now cut open my lotion bottles and scrape EVERY last bit out of bottles. I also only shop at stores whose brands I like, even it means spending a little more money. For example, I LOVE Target. I shop there exclusively instead of saving money at Wal-mart. I think Target is a much better corporate partner in the communities. Every community needs their support right now. Thank you Target!
