Michael: I remember when the newest high-tech sales gadget was automated (i.e., computerized) telephone marketing. A somewhat dreadful thing that is stil around. Sort of like "spam". So "social media marketing" doesn't surprise me, or even scare me.

I have to admit that I don't think about "social media marketing" or even "web marketing" -- I think about marketing. Which to me is communication about the utility, price and availability of a product. I do think that in practice marketing communication is a story, and is like a conversation. I've noticed not everybody is in agreement about the "conversation" part. But I suppose that is a post for another day.

Best Wishes,
Scott Charles
PlumbBob Market Research

Awesome post Michael. I think it boils down to the fact that back in the day, PR meant actually talking to people and making them interested in your brand, your story and you. Today, they seem to think it means, shouting your message at as many people as possible.
